MEMORIUPOL

A Screening of Short Films

Presented by Diana Berg,

current GCAC artist-in-residence

Thursday, October 23

6PM

@ Grand Central Art Center

The screening of short films and subsequent discussion is dedicated to raising awareness about the city of Mariupol, Ukraine. In the early days of the full-scale war, Russian troops surrounded this Ukrainian port city, besieging it for three months. Now largely destroyed, many residential buildings are no longer habitable, and the city is under occupation.

On Thursday, October 23rd, at 6 PM, we will explore the rich, diverse, and intercultural history of Mariupol—a city largely unknown to many foreigners before the war began. We will delve into contemporary arts, various urban communities, and its industrial and cultural heritage. We believe Mariupol should be remembered not only as a site of genocide but also as a city with a multi-layered history and a vibrant cultural life.

The films being shown are directed by various Ukrainian professional and emerging filmmakers for Platform TU between 2021 and 2022. They tell stories of everyday life, artistic exploration, dreams of local teenagers, and the realities of war. Platform TU was an independent art space in Mariupol from 2016 to 2022, aimed at promoting human rights and freedoms through grassroots culture, local activism, and modern arts, while building a community of young, creative, and open-minded people.

The films will be presented by Diana Berg, the director of art-platform TU (Mariupol, Ukraine), and current artist-in-residence at Grand Central Art Center.
